Hike Ace Gap trail, February 18, 2012

Ace Gap trail begins where Rich Mountain Road meets the park boundary. We will use Dry Valley Road to get to the trailhead. The trail is essentially flat for the first 4.2 miles then it loses about 300 feet in the next 6/10th mile where it reaches Ace Gap and campsite #7. The total distance is 9.6 miles. Along the way we will pass campsite #4 at 2.3 miles, Kelly Gap. The end of the trail is about 8/10th of a mile further, where it meets Beard Cane trail. If some want to go to the end of the trail the others can rest/relax at campsite #7. At Ace Gap an old railroad bed built in the early twentieth century by the Little River Lumber Company crosses the mountain.

We will meet in the Central Baptist Church of Bearden parking lot for car-pooling and leave at 8:30 am, stopping at the Browns Creek Shopping Center parking lot nearest the Sonic at 1707 E Lamar Alexander Pkwy, across the street from the Hardee’s, near the hospital in Maryville. We will leave there at 9:00 am. We recommend shoes to wear to and from the hike plus sturdy hiking shoes, other weather appropriate clothing, a snack, a drink and a camera. We recommend that riders in a carpool pay the driver 8 cents for each mile. Round trip distance from Knoxville is 82 miles ($.08 x 82 = $6.56). From Browns Creek, 42 miles ($.08 x 42 = $3.36).

After the hike plan on stopping on the way back for a meal and refreshments.

For specific information about the hike please call Tom at 974-4955 or leave a message at 588-5622 or send an email to Tom Cressler.

The Hiwassee State Scenic Rivers' "Gee Creek" campground is a haven and a home-away-from-home to many river users. Campsites are more tent-friendly than most. Some of the campsites are close enough to the river to be lulled to sleep each night by the sound of rushing water. An easy walk will lead you along the rivers edge for fishing, nature walks or a brisk dip in the cold waters.

Gee Creek campground has 43 sites, each with a table, fire ring and a grill. Public water and a bathhouse containing sinks, commodes, and hot showers are located near the center of the campground. We will only have space for 24 campers, we also have some extra camping equipment available for first timers, don’t forget to bring your bikes and your hiking stuff, directions to the campsite will come latter.

Rafting - The Hiwassee River is 5.5 miles of Class I and II whitewater.
